SHANEQUA, SHE / HER
I feel the pressure to be perfect all the time since I own a women's boutique. There's an unspoken expectation for women in the beauty industry or boutique business to have a pretty face, makeup on fleek, hair long and wavy, a perfect body (slim waist, no stomach, perky boobs, thick thighs and booty, slim face). Sometimes I hold myself to this unspoken expectation; not because I don't feel pretty as who I am (I'm definitely the shit), but because I want to be a successful boutique owner. I want the cash flow for Barcode Glam so I try to play the perfect part to get those sales.
I wanted to create a look that I would do for a Barcode Glam photoshoot: heavy makeup, straight hair and heels.
I created my modern day, glam hippie vibe which represents who I really am. Big hair, simple makeup and a flowy fit but still cute. My ultimate feeling of freedom and happiness.
I am all about women supporting women, so Dress. Code being a series of collaborations and portraits promoting our strength, our beauty, our style and our weaknesses is beautiful. Dress Code is Women Empowerment.
Even though I feel pressured to be 'perfect' all the time I do still love to have fabulous brows and long full lashes (blink blink), but the other makeup products y'all can keep. I like to keep it simple, my skin is glowing so a moisturizer and SPF works perfectly for me. My hair always has color in it; my hair is natural and it is mine. I can wake up, do a wash and go (the bigger the better). I can wear two braids, a bun or a twist out. You will rarely see me with straight hair because it’s just too much work and doesn't last long for me.
Since I am the original #barcodeglamgal I love to get dressed up. I would call my style the modern day glam hippie. As I have gotten older I love comfort so more flats less heels; flowy outfits but still a touch of lace or chic-ness in the look. As I get dressed, color always inspires me.
I learned just how stylish I can be and that I absolutely love who I am.
